Samples: Highlights Rebus

I thought I’d share this sample that came in the mail yesterday. It’s a one-page illustration I did for Highlights magazine, a rebus puzzle, entitled “Best Friends” by Catherine Denton. This was fun to pull together and I particularly enjoy it when I keep the line work loose, clean, and simple.

(Copyright Highlights for Children, 2010)

Below: I usually do my roughs using the layout the art director sends me as a template. I’ve also included a closeup of the area where the main illustration is–the little girl with all the thought bubbles talking to her grandmother.

Some other illustrators I know who have illustrations in the November 2010 issue: Chuck Dillon (2 puzzles!), Holli Conger, Karen Lee & Don Tate.

I love the way you have illustrated the grandma because she is so real and she reminds me of myself and I am a grandma too and I think my grandson sees me like this character.
So many illustrators depict older women as ugly and mean and fat and…well…just awful.
Your grandma is kind and gentle and safe and loving and children will relate to her because she is probably a lot like their grandmas.
Your sensitivity and understanding of the way kids think is very unique and special.
    So there.
And I love Clumsy’s latest chocolate overdose story. I will remember it when Christmas comes again soon and the chocolates appear in pretty boxes just for me.
Too much ‘me’ here. I apologize.

Thanks, Paula. I didn’t see this earlier. I have been crazy stupid busy. I really liked your piece, I never did one of those types of stories, they must be fun!

Glad to hear you’re busy, Chuck. That’s a good thing! Maybe HL will send a rebus your way someday soon. They are fun to do, yes!
