Highlights Magazine: “Grandma’s Pickles”

I found this illustration I did up on the Highlights For Children‘s website the other day, and realized I’d forgotten about it:

It’s the illustration for a poem by Marileta Robinson. Can’t say I’ve ever had hot pickles! Have you? The little girl certainly is enjoying it, but not without some tears–albeit happy ones!

My grandma (and mom) made sweet pickles. To this day I am unable to eat sour pickles. As far as i’m concerned, everything about them is wrong.

    Thank you, Efi!

Lil: Ahhhh… I used to have those bread and butter pickles from my mom and grandmother, myself. Dills are okay by me though. But what of these spicy pickles? Hmmmm? Not sure I demand heat in my pickles!

Thank you both for your comments!
