Illustration Friday: “Dessert”

This image just kind of evolved with no plan, starting out with the mother and daughter sitting at a table (which I wish weren't pink, but oh well). This style I mess with, many times I use no rough or sketch to work off of. ...

Samples: “Wiggly Worms”

I just this week received my copy of the May 2010 issue of High Five magazine which contains a recent spread I illustrated for them. Sometimes it takes me a while to get these as I have samples sent to my Texas address and then they are forwarded to me up north. In this case, ...

Samples: Chirp! “Playing Around” Spread

Taking a little break from the fun of cartooning, I wanted to post a sample of a magazine spread I did recently that arrived in the mail this week. Chirp magazine is put out by the Canada-based OwlKids. They are a great client to work for and I've enjoyed all the projects they've contracted me ...

This is little guy (or gal?) is from something I was messing around with yesterday. I also posted this on the Illustration for Kids blog. If you want to see what some of us have been working on lately, please check it out.

Samples: Tara’s Travel Journal Mag Spread

This is a recent spread I worked on for Clubhouse Jr. magazine's May 2010 issue. The art director asked for me to do a number of simple spots as well as the title to add to a young girl's "travel journal". I was to simulate a style that she herself might do if she ...

Greeting Card: Mother’s Day and Dogs

They go together well, doncha think? Some samples of greeting cards I illustrated for RSVP came in the mail a few weeks ago. The one below is for Mother's Day (Duh!) I didn't concept or write these; just did the drawings.

Elly

I don't have anything to say today, really. I woke up a little late and feel behind with much work to do (Never enough time, ya know..?) I have been posting everyday, though, so I found this in the coffers of some area of the computer--a picture book page I worked on a few months ...

Warm Up: Something for Valentine’s Day

I'm not a big fan of Valentine's Day. In elementary school it was exciting, because I could put my creative energy into decorating a shoebox with fellow classmates to house our valentines to each other. Pink and white cupcakes with some sort of red punch ...

Samples: “Happy Hugs”

Hey all. Another illustration for a kids' magazine. This time it's for Focus on the Family's Clubhouse Jr., the February 2010 issue. I blogged a little about this in early December when I was working on it. These big and busy scenes are time-consuming but awfully fun to do! In the case below, ...

Samples: “Valentine’s Day Disaster”

It being the week before Valentine's Day, I have a few illustrations that are in the February 2010 issues of various kids magazines. In the February 2010 issue of Highlights magazine, I did the spots for "Valentine's Day Disaster", written by Michelle L. Brown. I used a loose line work a watercolor wash ...

Illustration Friday: “Muddy”

Muddy Waters, the big blues man. One of my first thoughts when I saw the prompt this week. I also saw several other Muddy Waters so it was a popular solution. As for style and execution, I wanted to see what I could do with the digital watercolor brushes ...

Random Roughs: Alien in the House

A recent character study for a project. I don't do many monsters and aliens, etc. I should work some into my portfolio, I think.

Samples: Highlights January 2010

Oops! I kind of missed posting this in January. That's probably because sample issues from Highlights get sent to Texas and, well, I'm still up north right now. So I forget these things are coming out. Anyway, I did a few spots for a spread entitled, "Old Dog, New Tricks?" (written by Jeffrey ...

Random Roughs: Sleepy Bears

Picked out a random rough of something I've been working on. This is actually a throw-away rough for a spread from an early/emergent reader. The story was changed and the bears' day starts at 5 a.m. now so this spread is kaput. But I rather liked it so wanted to give it some reason for ...

Mole & Mouse

Continuing with the mole study, here's little mole with his mouse friend. This is a segment from a much larger scene, but it allows mole to be shown in some context besides just a study.  He's turning into a fun character to draw. Oh. And so is little mouse!

The Best Medicine–Editorial Illustration

I've been enjoying using the painterly style for a few jobs I've had lately. I did this small editorial illustration for Children's Ministry magazine's Jan/Feb 2010 issue. It's a fun style to work in and seems to be coming along nicely.
