I HATE the flying roaches that are down here in South Texas. You can be contently doing your own thing and then—WACK! One of them flies directly into your head (is this their idea of an attack?)! Uhm, so yeah. That was my experience tonight as I was working at the computer. Ick!
And I’ve made the li’l critter in my drawing (above) look slightly more appealing than he really is.
Below are some perhaps interesting (or not) roach/cucaracha links:
*Wikipedia on La Cucaracha
*The Straight Dope on “La Cucaracha”, the song. Great little b&w drawings to accompany entries.
*Lalo Alcaraz’s comic strip
*An urban legend concerning a cockroach.
*Roach Urban Legend #2.
*Roach sportsgear.
*T-A&MU on cockroaches.
*Yucky Roach World from the Discovery Channel.
*Need roach graphics?
*The Roaches, rock formation in Northern England.
*The Soundworlds of Steve Roach. Ambient music with bug noise?
*cyberroach. Not sure if this guy is kidding or not.
*A poem, by Patrick Martin.
*They used to race roaches in France!
*Papa Roach, the band.
*”Two roaches entered a bar..”; roach joke.
*A flash site featuring animation of the song “La Cucaracha”: (warning: really bad!) It’s for kids, but, you know, the original song’s chorus has a reference to marijuana. Hmmm…
*The five-trumpet musical car horn.
*A Mexican cocktail.
*A Mexican restaurant in St. Paul, MN (Shoot. Now I’m hungry. Dare I make a Taco Bell run…?)
*Home furnishings store in Somewheresville, AZ (I rather like the furniture).
*U. of South Carolina Madagascar Hissing Roach cam. Who would want to…nevermind. I don’t need a cam to see roaches. And I swear the ones around here hiss, too.
*A costume (LOVE the model!)
*La Cucaracha: The Movie (on the Rotten Tomatoes website)
Spanish civil war site.
*A children’s play.
*”La Cucaracha” ringtone.
*Another Restaurant…somewhere in Germany, me thinks.
*And another in Germany! Nice flash with moving roaches. Just what you look for in a restaurant.
*And if you’re in or around Stockholm, Sweden sometime…
Of course there were plenty more sites to list but I think I’m going to make a late-night run for a burrito.
Yay! A cockroach post.
I like them in a creepy, grossed out, not-really-liking-them-but-they-are-fascinating sort of way. There’s a weird, wonderful insect museum in Philadelphia above an exterminator’s office called the Insectarium, that has an exhibit called the cockroach kitchen, which is basically a model kitchen enclosed in plexiglass that they put a couple of roaches and a little food into a looooooooooooong time ago and just let them do their thing. It’s SO gross and riveting at the same time.
I like your blog a lot, by the way. I found you through Wee and the Wolf.
Don’t you just love how in Texas EVERYTHING is bigger and better! Love the drawing, that is too funny. And quite the collection of links there!
Wow! Who knew there was so much about roaches out on the web! I have heard of the Texas sized roaches from missionaries who served there, many awful stories about them. And I thought our mosquitos were bad!! LOL
Being a native Texan, I hear you Girl. I hate it when they stick in your hair. The other thing I hate, scorpions in bed. I have had a few. Nasty. Love you illo intrepretation.
Yikes! I’m in Texas, but haven’t had any roach attacks here. In my experience the most aggressive flying roaches were on the FL panhandle–although none of them made it past my grandmother and her whacking shoes.
Love the illo, very funny. I am a firm believer in premeditated roach attacks (however bumbling their fwaps into your person may seem.)
All in all, barking dogs don’t seem so bad anymore, eh?
I also live in South Texas, well-Houston. We have those Monster-sized “water bugs.” I don’t care what you call them; they’re disgusting. I lived in Panama (yeah, the one with the canal) when I was little, and experienced roaches the size of your hand. *shudder* Since that time, my revulsion of those creatures has gotten worse. I saw your doodle, and while cute….I was internally gagging! haha! I never knew there was so much info on those revolting insects-yeck.
Heather: Oh, yes, the unofficial motto of Texas! However, bigger’s not always ‘better’, eh?
Aimee Roo: Poor you! I’d rather fend off a roach or two than the mosquitos!
Kim: OMG! I’ve never had a scorpion in my bed! Where were you living at the time you were experiencing that?
Jamie: I use a towel to whack ‘em. Of course, that only stuns them briefly as they’re slung across to the other side of the room. I should call your grandma for reinforcements.
Janee: Hee! Do I complain to much? Oh dear…
Maeflower: Another OMG! those would be 6″ roaches or better! I shudder to think of it.
Uh, yeah…I got a little caught up in the link-looking for Roaches a la Cucharacha. I had to stop myself or would have been at it forever. What I posted was just the tip of the iceberg.
Thanks again for your comments, all y’all!
Having never been to Texas, I cannot relate however we do have these nasty little bugs here that I am just becoming acquainted with. My husband calls them no-see-ums. You don’t see them and they hurt like heck!
Hahahha…of COURSE you don’t complain too much. I’m just relating to your woes!
love the bug’s expression, kinda the one I get when I go after the nasty buggers !
Nope, not kidding! Love these little crawlers! Nice blog you got here!
