Yardy Yard Yard

My father’s been asking me for, oh, a decade or two, to do a drawing of his house.  I always begged off, saying, “I don’t draw things like that”, or something along the lines of ”I can’t draw things realistically”.  But since I’ve begun sketching, I thought I would give it a shot and give the results to him for a Christmas present.

One HUGE dilmma is that, well…you can’t see the house from the street.  At all.  It’s on a big corner lot and has bushes, shrubs, and dense foliage along the perimeter of the lot along the street.  So no house sketch, but a yard sketch for you, Dad.  I know he’ll be happy with it.  He’s so proud of his yard.  He’s one of these naturalist-conservationist-birder people.  He actually has a sign out front that states his lawn is an official wildscaped habitat.  I love it, really.  Parts of it are like walking in woods.  So anyway, I did a sketch as best I could of the “house”–or yard–from the small park across the street.  Take note that winter has decended upon us (notice the trees in the distance with just SOME leaves on them).  That’s how you can tell.  In fact, earlier this week, the ash trees that canopy over the driveway decided it was fall and most of the leaves came down in a 2-3 day span. We’ll be seeing signs of “spring” soon, though.  Buds will start appearing on the leaf-losing trees in early February.  Welcome to winter in South Texas.

    Hi Paula,

I can relate so well to the “I can’t draw realistically” refrain. This is a really fun and realistic rendering of the house. Your dad sounds like a wonderful character.

isay: Yes, I’m sure it’s almost as green as where you are! Merry Christmas to you, too!

Edde: Thank you very much. : )

Cin: And he did! He’s a hard one to please, too! Merry Christmas to you as well!

Caroline: It’s been such a good experience to make these attempts to draw what I see. I never would have tried this just a few years ago. Thanks for leaving a comment!
