Long Ago And Far Away…

(Commissioned illustration for a natural history museum display in the mid-90′s.)

I’ve seen some illustrator blogs out there speaking of ‘style’ and such matters: how do I develop a style, what IS my style, do I HAVE a style, and so on. Even though I’ve been doing this as a business for over 15 years, I wrestle with the same issues. In order to answer those questions (and perhaps come up with solutions), I believe it’s beneficial to reflect on what over the years has driven me in the direction to where I am presently. Why am I splintered in my styles? Why do I do cartooning AND all these other styles? Should I settle on one style or remain schizoid? Does it even matter??? Unless it’s just me being hyped up on caffein and head cold medication, I’m thinking I’d like to reflect on that aloud, here in this blog. But don’t hold it against me if I never mention it again. : )

O no! You’ve got me a-pondering The Big Style Question (which should be spelled out in one of those monster movie fonts with the drippy lettering and stuff… and delivered in the coice of Peter Lorre) again. :) Will it ever, ever be resolved?!!! sigh.

And I LOVE LOVE LOVE your Hank Williams up there. You blow me away, Paula!!

Hey, wee! Oh, sorry to bring up the “style” Q again. But don’t fret; I don’t think I’ll get into it much. In fact, I very much considered pulling the post, but then thought, “Eh..”. I seem to be okay other people discussing it, but I don’t want to REALLY openly ponder my own bouts with it. I guess. Not really. So just go on your merry way and do your stuff!

Oh, and thanks for the “I likes” on the HW piece. : )
