Church Sketches: Emmaus Anglican Church, Westmount, QC

I had a very nice break this holiday season–time away from the computer/the studio/the art; Facebook and Twitter, etc. It was much needed, I tell ya. And now it’s time to get into gear and back to work. I’m looking forward to it.

And so I start this year of blogging with a sketch from yesterday’s church service. It’s been a while since I’ve had some church sketches to offer up and I was happy to have had a little time to eek this one out during the sermon. It was a cold and very snowy day yesterday here in Montreal making it a challenge to get to and from destinations, but we did it. It was all worth it to see people I hadn’t seen in a long while.

i just love your church sketches. And as an Anglican myself, I enjoy the view of your church. Inspires me to bring my moleskin to church next week too.

Thanks, Janice! You definitely should take the sketchbook to church, yes. I find it soothing and relaxing to sketch the environment. I think you’ll get the same pleasure. : )

Hey, is there anyway of opening up your blog comment area to “name/url”? I’d love to leave a comment there but presently one can only do so if they have accounts on selected places.

Nice one Paula! I love the stain glass window!

Amazing how empty the place looks from your pew. We certainly are in a church rather larger than our needs. I enjoy sitting in the back (a necessity with a little one, I can tell you!), because one can see almost everyone (all except us back bench dwellers).

What a neat sketch! As always, something to inspire us. I look forward to another year of your wonderful and often so funny drawings. I am a lapsed Anglican. Sitting at the back is one of my favourite things to do although I have never sketched while sitting in a pew. Maybe if I start back to the cathedral in Vancouver I could sketch my way through sermon time. Maybe you are inspiring me to get my act together and go back. Thanks for your blog.

Paula, beautifully rendered. I could never do sketches while I worship. Do you have a special way to do the color? PS Thanks for visiting my blog earlier.

Hey, Patti! It’s that entire left side you don’t really see when you’re sitting in the back. It’s a lovely old church with lot of character. I hope to do more sketches.

Hey, Jazz! I’m glad you like it! I think of you when I post these as I know you favor them. : )

Hey, Mary Jane! I would highly recommend going to a church a sketching. You have architecture and people (who stay relatively still) to draw and it’s just a pleasant setting. If you’re in the back, you usually get a good view of the over-all interior. That’s a nice sketch-challenge! So I say, go for it!

Hi Wendy! I enjoyed your blog and look forward to exploring it more. As for sketching in church, you have to do what’s comfortable to you. I sketch during the more passive moments (sermons, readings, etc.) and it doesn’t affect my listening. I will sometimes incorporate notes as well. I don’t add the color while there, but post-church, using a digital program after I scan the piece. I enjoy this part as well, as sometimes I’ll play with the sketch and take it further than I might if I were doing the colorizing on site.
