Samples: "Smart Speaking"

Samples arrived yesterday from a Korean publisher who kept me very busy over the last several months. I did a slew of cartoons for Happy House to use for this series of books for learning English. There were well over 250 drawings done between three books within a very short turn around time. I had to work fast with little second guessing!

I enjoy working on projects like this.  They’re my bread and butter.

Below: The covers.

Inside each book and workbook (shown, below), they used my spots and icons everywhere. On the first page of each unit, is a four-panel, “big cartoon”. Thirty-six were created in all of those.  These by far took the longest time to do.  I didn’t add the speech balloons but left room to accommodate them. It was certainly a good workout in character development and keeping them looking the same throughout, as well as dealing with facial expressions and all the things that go into cartooning and sequential art.

And below is as sample of the workbook and a CD, which I didn’t expect.  I wonder what’s on it?

Below: Two of the main characters I enjoyed drawing. Their names were Izzy (cat) & Fuzz (mouse).

    Someone’s been very busy!!!
Job well done! Thanks for sharing.
I especially love the elephant! His expression is just a little varied from the others (possibly the tilt of the head?, the out of the corner eye contact?), as if he’s been up to something…
    Nice work!

You’re so good at this Paula and what a lot of work! They look fantastic, I think the publisher should be chuffed to bits. (Do you have that expression in the USA too?)x

Hee hee….I do the same type of work, though for different International markets. Mostly the Middle East and Africa at the moment. When I did the Saudi one they sent me to Saudi for 3 days! (Hubby had to come as chaperone, too.) Educational work is hard work, as you so rightly say but I too find a satisfaction from it. Oh, those tight deadlines, though! Ouch!
